Cataracts are a common age-related condition where the normally clear lens of the eye becomes cloudy. This cloudiness can interfere with vision, making it harder to see clearly, especially at night or in bright light.
Common Symptoms of Cataracts
Blurry or cloudy vision
Glare or halos around lights, especially at night
Faded or yellowed colors
Changes in glasses prescription
Risk Factors of Cataracts
Diabetes
Smoking
UV Exposure
Long term steroid use
Eye injuries
Can Cataracts Be Prevented?
Not necessarily, but you can slow the progression with:
● Wearing sunglasses with UV protection
● Avoiding smoking
● Maintaining a healthy diet
● Managing health conditions like diabetes
● Attending regular eye exams
Treatment Options for Cataracts
In the early stages, vision may be improved with glasses or brighter lighting. As cataracts progress, vision cannot always be improved with a new glasses prescription and surgery may be the only effective treatment.
Cataract surgery is safe, routine, and highly effective at restoring clear vision. It is the most common (and most successful) surgery in the world.
