Macular Degeneration: What You Need To Know

What is Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration (also called Age-related Macular Degeneration, or AMD) is an eye condition that affects the macula.

The macula is the central part of your retina responsible for sharp, straight ahead vision.

It can lead to blurred or distorted central vision, especially in older adults.

What Is Happening With Macular Degeneration?

There are two types of macular degeneration:

1. Dry AMD

In Dry AMD, the cells of the macula slowly break down, causing thinning of the retina and deposit drusen (tiny yellow cholesterol deposits).

2. Wet AMD

In Wet AMD, abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina and leak fluid or blood, causing more rapid and severe damage to the macula.

How Do People Notice It?

Blurry, dark, or fuzzy central vision (peripheral vision normally is unaffected)

straight lines (like door frames or text) appear wavy or bent

trouble recognizing faces or reading, especially in low light

What Does Treatment Look Like

Dry AMD

● Monitor at yearly exams
● There is no cure, but progression may be slowed with:

  • Oral eye vitamins
  • Healthy diet rich in leafy greens and omega-3s

Wet AMD:

● A referral to a retinal specialist would be necessary for further treatment with the goal to reduce leakage and swelling, and may stabilize or even improve vision
